Instructor, Adapted PE (3089-61)


Job Duties (Summary): 

·         Instructs and develops students with developmental disabilities in gross and perceptual motor skills, physical fitness, flexibility, strength, body image, balance, locomotion through group and individual instruction; leads students in group games, exercises, sports skills; water safety skills, swimming skills and personal hygiene awareness; instructs students in sportsmanship, and teamwork, travels to and gains access to other worksites in accordance with agency procedures.


·         Assesses students to determine physical ability level and share assessment information.


·         Prepares IEP in conjunction with team and progress reports regarding students’ physical skill and development; determines appropriate program and time frame for students’ needs; updates IEP and writes progress reports as required; documents student activities and progress; acts as physical development consultant to other staff and parents.


·         Plans physical education programs for students to address physical development level and abilities of each class (e.g., determines games or individual activities which will assist students in reaching goals); prepares schedules and correspondence to parents and various agencies describing programs, special program needs or requesting information; plans and coordinates sporting events, meets, tournaments, games, etc. with other schools or agencies; organizes Special Olympic program outings.


·         Attends to physical and behavioral needs of students as necessary (e.g., assists with feeding, toileting, changing soiled clothes, mobility, illness, etc.); lifts, positions, and moves students in a safe manner, according to in-service training, using proper lifting techniques; assists with loading and unloading of students on buses and other vehicles.


·         Works cooperatively with other staff, parents, caseworkers, medical personnel, specialists, etc. to achieve student goals and programming as identified by IEP; facilitates communication with students through use of sign language, picture communication, etc.


Job Duties (Summary) (Cont’d):

·         Administers oral and topical medication(s) to students after receiving appropriate training, and when delegated by a Registered Nurse employed by the agency.


·         Maintains required licenses and/or certificates, develops and demonstrates knowledge of current developments in field to provide most beneficial care.


·         Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.


·         Perform other duties as required or assigned.


 Requirements (Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification): 

·         Bachelor degree in Adapted Physical Education.

·         Ohio teacher’s license and ability to obtain certification in adapted physical education.

·         Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to various work locations.
