Dean of Culture – IDEA Valley View (22-23)

Role Mission: Dean of Culture works directly with scholars to ensure that they graduate from IDEA Public Schools and go to and through college by providing culturally responsive support. The Dean of Culture, in collaboration with school leadership, is responsible for creating and facilitating key systems that drive the culture of the school. With the school leadership team, the Dean of Culture will ensure that each student is appropriately supported so that they can make progress towards their individual goals.

The Dean of Culture will support the principals in three key areas: Student Culture, Staff Culture, and Community Culture.

What You’ll Do — Accountabilities


Student Culture

1)       Building and supporting a student culture based on Positive Behavioral Intervention & Supports (PBIS) and Restorative Justice

a)       Create, lead, and maintain restorative justice program

b)       Lead Professional Development for all staff around best practices in both PBIS and Restorative Justice

c)       Select/create and monitor systems to track student behaviors, interventions, and supports

d)       Identify trends and create plans to improve each student’s feelings of inclusivity and ability to function successfully in both the school and classroom setting

e)       Approach and teach student behavior as a set of lagging, learned and mastered skills

f)        Create safe spaces within the schools for students to deescalate and build back trust with their school community

g)       Develop individualized plans for students to increase their agency and ownership of their behavior

h)       Manage student incentive system as a part of the school-wide behavior system.

i)        Plan, implement, and maintain monthly culture focus for school-wide initiatives (Anti-Bullying, etc.)

j)        Monitor student grades, identify trends and implement proactive interventions to keep students on track to graduate.


Staff Culture

2)       Building a staff culture dedicated to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

a)       Lead professional development dedicated to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

b)       Implement coaching from Regional Equity Coach via professional development, on-the-spot coaching, and system implementation

c)       Engage staff in empathy interviews to ensure all voices are heard and feedback is acted upon

d)       Track staff sentiment and morale via regular surveys and supporting interviews with staff

3)       Build and support a staff culture of accountability

a)       Create, maintain, and monitor school-wide behavior systems, ensuring all staff are faithfully implementing school-wide behavior systems

b)       Support Grade Level Administrations (other Leadership Team Members) and Grade Team Teacher Leaders in decision-making and implementation of positive behavioral interventions and systems

c)       Attend Grade-Level Meetings and provide feedback to Grade Team Teacher Leaders on both meeting structure and meeting impact.

d)       Coach and manage all teachers on implementation of appropriate responses to behavior

4)       Function as a part of the School Leadership Team for both Academy and College Prep

a)       Attend all leadership team operating mechanisms like Daily Huddle, Lead Team Tactical, Lead Team Step Back, etc.

b)       Report directly to the Campus Principals for both Academy and College Prep


Community Culture

5)       Develop and implement consistent communication with parents/families to both celebrate and address student behaviors.

a)       Proactively partners with families to ensure communication is timely (response to parents within 48 hours) and that all communication barriers are eliminated

b)       Create and deliver a Parent Weekly Newsletter for families

i)        Leverage other staff and leadership to contribute to newsletter

6)       Manage student attendance matrix and collaborate with team members to address attendance concerns with families/parents

7)       Collaborate with school Social Worker and Counselors to provide families/parents with appropriate interventions

8)       Support teachers/staff in meetings with parents and families

Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
Experience: 2+ years of teaching experience required; school leadership experience strongly preferred

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Practices

What We Offer



Salaries for people entering this role typically fall between $60,569 to $67,838, commensurate with relevant experience and qualifications and in alignment with internal equity. This role is also eligible for a performance bonus based on individual and organizational performance and goal attainment.
